The Nintendo 3DS is the next evolution of Nintendo's handheld gaming products, and successor to the most successful handheld console of all time, the Nintendo DS. Although the most prominent new feature is the 3D capability of the top screen, the Nintendo 3DS has several new features:

Nintendo 3DS main features

  • Top screen with 3D effect - no special glasses required - with a slider on the side to increase or decrease the 3D effect.
  • 3D camera built in (640x480 resolution) for taking photo and video.
  • Motion sensor and gyroscope for iPhone-style tilt and shake effects.
  • Movie, photo and music playback is coming including Netflix and 3D Hollywood movies.
  • Faster graphics and processor power than the DS.
  • Joystick-style 'circle pad' added to the traditional buttons and touchscreen of the DS.
  • Virtual Console for downloading and playing classic Gameboy games.
  • Backward compatible with current DS games.
  • Will be available in 2 colors: Aqua blue and Cosmo black.
  • It's about the same size as the Nintendo DSi.
  • Launch titles include Nintendogs + Cats, The Sims, Super Street Fighter IV, Madden, Pro Evo Soccer, Ridge Racer, Rayman, Super Monkeyball and Lego Star Wars.

Additionally the Nintendo 3DS has extra functions that allow for extended use of the handheld:

  • Augmented reality card games.
  • Mii avatar studio compatible with Nintendo Wii.
  • Internet browser and free online access via WiFi and AT&T hotspots.
  • StreetPass mode for automatically connecting to other Nintendo 3DS.
  • SpotPass mode for automatically downloading content from Nintendo like demos or magazines.
  • Activity log and pedometer, which earn you virtual coins.
